A Pop-Up Arts Summer Camp

Join local artist and professor, Jennifer Taylor, and local guest artists and musicians for a creative fun summer exploring the Visual & Performing Arts. June 14 - August 6, 2021 in Downtown Harrisonburg

Visual Arts

Featuring an artist or artistic movement each week, students will explore the elements and principles of design. Instruction will be differentiated. Artistic Mediums include painting, ceramics, collage, sculpture, glass mosaics, fused glass, and jewelry making. Guest artists will join the camp as appropriate. Exhibition at the end of the week. 

We will maximize use of our indoor and outdoor spaces, using masks and social distancing, as suggested by the CDC. All instructors are vaccinated. There is a one-hour break between sessions for cleaning. Sessions are limited to 25 students. Students will be assigned a pod on Monday in which they will work throughout the week.

Music Performance

Featuring voice and instrument performance, students will learn basic, intermediate, and advanced performance skills, musicianship, and theory. Instruction will be differentiated. Guest artists will join the camp as appropriate. Group Performances at the end of the week.

Theatre

Featuring One Act and Musical Theatre, students will learn basic, intermediate, advanced acting and production skills. Instruction will be differentiated. Guest artists will join the camp as appropriate. Group Performances at the end of the week.

Amelia Taylor is a 2021 graduate of Spotswood High School where she studied voice and instrument performance. As an experienced Girl Scout leader, she also is a certified Firefighter and EMT. After summer, she plans to attend Radford University on a Music Therapy Scholarship.

Amelia Taylor, Music Lead, Soprano, Percussionist

Dr. Jennifer A. Taylor studied Art History, Art Studio, and Art Education at the University of South Carolina; Arts Policy at The Ohio State University; and currently teaches in the NASPAA Accredited MPA Program at JMU. Professionally trained as a visual artist, you can follow her explorations on Instagram @abstractartsgal. She is First Aid and CPR certified, and has been a Girl Scout Troop Leader for over 13 years.

Mary Katherine Kirkwood is a junior at Spotswood High School, where she actively participates in the Theatre and Choral Programs. Most recently, she performed in the school's musical, "Chicago."
